Thermal Curtains for Warmth, Comfort and Year‑Round Living
With thermal lined curtains, you are investing in comfort, improved energy efficiency, and a more sustainable way to live. These linings sit discreetly behind your main fabric, providing added insulation without compromising the look and feel of your chosen curtain style. Available in a range of options, including insulated coated linings and softly draped triple weave finishes, there is a solution to suit a wide range of interiors.
Thermal Lining Options Explained
Traditional Thermal lining has a coated finish to provide a barrier over the glass to keep the warmth in and the cold out. Triple weave linings are made from a triple layer of soft woven fabric to provide added warmth and softness across a variety of curtain styles. Each option can be paired with your preferred face fabric, so you never have to compromise on the overall aesthetic to achieve a practical and functional result.
Energy Efficiency & Insulation
Thermal linings are crafted to help regulate your home’s temperature, keeping warmth in during cooler months and reducing heat in summer. This added insulation can support lower energy use, helping to make your home more comfortable year-round.
Triple-Layer Insulation with Bumph
Bumph Interlining adds an additional layer between your fabric and the lining, creating a triple layer of insulation. Air is trapped between the layers, helping to keep your home warm and prevent cold air coming in. It can be paired with most fabrics and linings to provide the ultimate in warmth, luxury and softness.
Reduce Noise, Add Privacy
Denser linings help to muffle exterior noise and create a quieter, more restful atmosphere. They also enhance privacy and light control, especially when blackout linings are selected, giving you greater flexibility throughout the day and evening.

View AllCommon Questions About Thermal Curtains
Everything you need to know about thermal curtains, from lining options and care to how they perform year-round in New Zealand homes.
What is the difference between thermal and blackout curtains?
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to different things. Blackout or blockout curtains are designed primarily to block light, creating a darkened room ideal for bedrooms or media spaces. Thermal curtains are designed primarily to insulate, trapping warmth inside during winter and keeping heat out in summer. Some of our thermal lined curtains also offer strong light control, so you can achieve both benefits in one. If light blocking is your main priority, we can guide you toward the right combination of fabric and lining to suit your needs.
Do thermal curtains work in summer too?
Yes, and this is one of the most underappreciated benefits. The same insulating properties that keep warmth in during winter also help keep heat out during summer, particularly in rooms with north or west-facing windows. A well-lined thermal curtain acts as a barrier against radiant heat, helping to keep your home cooler without relying as heavily on air conditioning.
What thermal lining options are available?
We offer several lining options depending on the level of insulation and the look you are after. Traditional coated thermal lining provides a barrier against heat loss and is a practical, cost-effective choice. Triple weave lining uses three layers of softly woven fabric for added warmth and a more luxurious drape. For the ultimate insulation, bumph interlining adds a further layer between the face fabric and lining, trapping air and creating a noticeably warmer, softer result. Our consultants can help you choose the right option for your space and budget.
What is bumph interlining and do I need it?
Bumph is an additional layer of soft padding that sits between your curtain fabric and its lining. It creates a triple layer of insulation by trapping air, which significantly improves warmth and also gives curtains a full, weighted appearance. It works particularly well in older homes or rooms that are difficult to heat. Whether you need it depends on your home and your goals, and it is something our consultants can advise on during your complimentary consultation.
Can thermal curtains help reduce my power bills?
Thermal curtains alone will not replace good insulation, but they can make a meaningful difference to how efficiently your home retains heat. Windows are one of the biggest sources of heat loss in New Zealand homes, and a well-fitted thermal curtain creates a barrier that reduces drafts and slows heat transfer through the glass. Customers often notice a difference in comfort quite quickly, particularly in older homes where retrofitting full insulation is not always practical.
Are your thermal curtains made to measure?
Yes, all of our curtains are made to order in our Christchurch workroom. We do not sell off-the-shelf curtains. Every set is measured, designed, and made specifically for your windows, which means a precise fit, no gaps at the edges, and a finish that looks considered rather than added as an afterthought. A proper fit also makes a significant difference to thermal performance.
How do I care for my thermal curtains?
Vacuum your curtains regularly using an upholstery attachment to prevent damage and keep suction gentle. Allow air to circulate by opening windows regularly. Mildew thrives in damp, dusty environments and lined curtains can be particularly susceptible. Spot clean marks as soon as they appear. Test on a hidden area first, then blot gently with a soft cloth or sponge moistened with lukewarm water and a mild detergent if needed. Do not rub, as this can damage the fabric or lining. Dry clean with caution. Washing or dry cleaning thermal curtains can cause the lining to shrink or discolour, so always check care instructions before proceeding. Please note: specific care instructions for your chosen fabric and lining are provided with every order and are available from our team on request.
How long does it take to have thermal curtains made?
Lead times vary depending on fabric availability and current workload in our Christchurch workroom, but as a general guide you should allow four to eight weeks from the time your order is confirmed. We will keep you informed throughout the process and can advise on timing more specifically when you book your consultation.
