Outdoor Sofas for New Zealand Living

An outdoor sofa is the anchor of a relaxed outdoor space, the piece everything else gathers around. Whether it is a quiet spot for a morning coffee, somewhere to stretch out with a book, or the centre of a summer evening with friends, the right sofa sets the tone. Our outdoor sofas are chosen for how they feel to sink into as much as how they look, with deep, comfortable seating and frames built to handle the New Zealand climate. From compact two-seaters for a courtyard or balcony to generous three-seaters for a family deck, there is a sofa here to suit the way you like to relax outdoors.

Choosing the Right Size Outdoor Sofa

The right size sofa comes down to your space and how you want to use it. Start by measuring your area, and allow enough room to move comfortably around the sofa once it is in place.

As a general guide, leave around 90 centimetres of clear walkway around the sofa so people can move comfortably, and about 35 to 45 centimetres between the sofa and a coffee table, close enough to reach easily without feeling crowded. If you are not sure what will fit, our team is always happy to help you plan the right size for your space.

Two-Seater Outdoor Sofas

A smaller 2-seater sofa works well on decks, balconies and courtyards, or spaces where you would like to pair a sofa with armchairs rather than fill the area with one large piece. They keep a setting feeling open and easy to move around.

Three-Seater Outdoor Sofas

A 3-seater outdoor sofa is the most versatile choice for most New Zealand homes, offering generous seating for family and guests while still anchoring the space. They work well on a family deck or a larger patio, paired with a coffee table and a chair or two.

The Brands Behind Our Outdoor Sofas

Our outdoor sofas come from a considered mix of brands, each with its own take on comfort and design.

Otazen is known for beautifully crafted teak sofas with a strong design sensibility, exclusive to McKenzie & Willis in New Zealand. Du Soleil, our own outdoor living brand, brings relaxed, comfortable sofas in teak, powder-coated aluminium and weather-resistant fabrics. Woven+ leans into texture with teak, aluminium and all-weather weave, and Vincent Sheppard offers a refined, woven feel. Jati Kebon and Devon bring dependable teak and aluminium sofas for everyday use, and Portico adds considered, style-led designs. The collection also includes the Belle Interiors Collection Retreat Outdoor Sofa, designed by Cameron Foggo, bringing the design-led Belle Interiors sensibility outdoors.

Outdoor Sofa Materials

The material you choose shapes both the look of your sofa and how it lives outdoors.

Solid Teak

Offering natural warmth and a honey tone that softens to a silver-grey patina over time. We use A-grade Indonesian teak, rich in the natural oils that help it resist splitting and weathering, for a sofa frame that feels solid and grounded and ages beautifully.

Powder-Coated Aluminium

Perfect for keeping a sofa light and easy to move, with clean, contemporary lines. It is naturally rust-resistant, which makes it especially well suited to coastal and exposed sites, and needs very little upkeep.

Rope and Weave

A great choice to add a softer, more tactile feel, bringing texture and a relaxed look to a sofa while standing up to sun and rain.

Weather-Resistant Outdoor Fabric

These finish the sofa in quality outdoor fabrics, made to sit in the sun, handle the odd summer downpour, and still feel good to come back to, with quick-drying open-cell inners on many pieces for lasting comfort.

Looking for a Larger, Wrap-Around Setting?

If you are furnishing a bigger space, or would like a single coordinated seating area rather than a standalone sofa, a corner or modular design may suit better. Our Modular Corner Sofas bring together corner, modular and sectional designs and full lounge suites, with configurations that can be arranged to fit your space.

Common Questions About Outdoor Sofas

What size outdoor sofa do I need?

It depends on your space and how you like to use it. A two-seater outdoor sofa suits smaller decks, balconies and courtyards, or spaces where you would rather pair a sofa with armchairs. A three-seater is the most versatile choice for most homes, offering generous seating while still anchoring the space. Before buying, measure your area and leave around 90 centimetres of clear walkway around the sofa so people can move comfortably.

What is the best material for an outdoor sofa?

The best material depends on the look you want and how much upkeep you are happy with. Teak brings natural warmth and character, ages beautifully, and is rich in oils that resist weathering. Powder-coated aluminium is light, rust-resistant and low-maintenance, making it well suited to coastal sites. All-weather rope and weave add softness and texture. Each performs well in the New Zealand climate, so it often comes down to the style and feel you prefer.

Is a teak or aluminium outdoor sofa better?

Both are excellent, and the right choice depends on what you value. Teak offers natural warmth, grain and a material that develops a silver-grey patina over time, ideal if you want character and a more organic look. Aluminium is lighter, easier to move, and needs almost no maintenance, ideal if you want a cleaner, more contemporary feel with minimal upkeep. Both handle sun, rain and coastal conditions well.

How far should a coffee table be from an outdoor sofa?

As a general guide, leave around 35 to 45 centimetres between an outdoor sofa and a coffee table. This is close enough to reach a drink or a book easily, while still leaving room to move and to stretch your legs. If the table is also used for serving, err toward the larger end of that range.

Can an outdoor sofa be left in the rain?

The frame, yes. Teak and powder-coated aluminium sofa frames are made to stay outdoors year-round and handle rain without issue. The cushions are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof, so while they cope well with the odd shower and dry quickly, they will last longer if covered during long wet spells or stored somewhere dry over winter.

Do outdoor sofas come as a set with chairs and a table?

Some of our outdoor sofas are part of a wider range to create coordinated settings with matching armchairs and coffee or side tables, while others are sold as single pieces you can pair as you like. If you would prefer a larger, wrap-around seating area, our outdoor corner and modular sofas offer full lounge suites and configurable settings.
