Interior Design Project: Designing a Serene Space

Our interior designer Kendal invites us into one of her latest projects: a beautiful, serene home based in Hamilton. From initial ideas to finishing touches, hear what Kendal had to say about the journey of bringing this beautiful space to life.

The Initial Consultation

From the very first consultation, the focus was on creating a home that was minimal and functional but evokes a warm and natural feeling. Starting with an established floor plan, we used the selected flooring, carpet, and paint as the foundation to build upon. From there, we explored custom furniture options tailored to suit both the home and the client’s style.

Developing the design concept

I began the process by creating a mood board for each area of the home to give the client a clear visual representation of the furnishing direction I had in mind. With the client based overseas and unable to visit the store in person, these visuals played an important role in helping guide decisions. We started with a blank canvas and agreed on earthy, natural finishes as the foundation for the furniture, allowing us to introduce colour and personality through cushions, artwork, and accessories.

Key Considerations

Keeping the spaces minimal and functional, but still with the element of warm and natural. The sofas and armchairs were made by Kovacs furniture, based in Christchurch. Using NZ Made Brand allows us to have more options with fabrics and customisation. The comfort and quality are outstanding, it’s great to support our NZ businesses.

Reflecting on the project

It was a genuine pleasure collaborating with a client who embraced my vision with such trust. Together, we built a close relationship, and seeing these ideas come to life so beautifully in their home was truly inspiring.
