Living Room Tables for New Zealand Homes

Tables play a quiet but essential role in a living room. They hold the lamp, the cup of tea, the stack of books and the everyday moments that make a home feel lived in. They also shape how a space works, where people gather and how the lounge area flows. In New Zealand, these living room tables are sometimes referred to as occasional tables, a flexible group that covers coffee tables, side tables and console tables. Our collection brings these together in one considered range, with pieces from our own McW Collection and the Belle Interiors Collection, alongside designs from David Shaw, Ethnicraft, Malta Design and Notre Monde. Whether you are furnishing a coastal Mount Maunganui home, an Auckland apartment, a Wellington villa or a family home in Christchurch, there is a considered table here to suit.

Coffee Tables, Side Tables and Console Tables

A well-considered lounge usually has three types of tables working together, each with its own role to play.

Coffee Tables

The coffee table anchors the centre of the room, sitting in front of the sofa and grounding the lounge area. Our coffee table range spans timber, travertine, glass and mixed-material designs, from sculptural statement pieces to flexible nesting sets.

SIde Tables

Side tables, lamp tables and nest of tables work alongside seating, holding a lamp, a drink or a book within easy reach. Our side table range includes round, drum, tray-top and C-shaped designs in timber, metal, stone and concrete.

Console Tables

Console tables, also known as hall tables, sit against a wall or behind a sofa, anchoring entryways and defining open-plan lounge spaces. Our console range includes custom-made McW Collection pieces alongside designs from Ethnicraft and Notre Monde.

How These Tables Work Together in a Living Room

Living room tables are at their best when considered as a family rather than as individual pieces. A coffee table grounds the centre of the lounge, side tables anchor the seating around it, and a console table adds rhythm along a wall or behind the sofa. For a cohesive look, we often suggest choosing pieces that share at least one material or tonal cue, such as a common timber, a shared metal finish, or a consistent sense of proportion, while letting form and scale vary across the room. A perfectly matched set of tables can feel a little static. A considered, layered mix tends to feel more like home.

Materials and Finishes Across Our Tables Range

Our living room tables span a curated range of materials, each bringing a different character to a space.

Timber

Timber adds warmth, depth and craft, and softens with age. It is the most adaptable choice across coffee, side and console tables and works in most homes.

Travertine and stone

Travertine and natural stone bring weight, texture and a quiet, considered presence. The veining and tonal variation in each piece make travertine one of the most distinctive choices in contemporary New Zealand interiors.

Mixed materials

A timber top set on a slim metal base is one of the most adaptable designs in the collection, layering warmth with a lighter, more architectural feel.

Glass

Glass tables read as lighter and more architectural. They suit smaller living rooms and apartments where a more open, uncluttered look is preferred.

Metal

Metal tables bring a quieter, architectural edge to a space. A slim metal frame can hold a generous top without feeling heavy, and metal designs work particularly well in contemporary, gallery-style or minimal interiors.

Common Questions About Living Room Tables

What tables do I need in a living room?

Most considered living rooms include three types of tables: a coffee table in the centre, one or two side tables alongside seating, and often a console table against a wall or behind the sofa. You do not need all three, but together they cover the main needs of a lounge area: a styled centrepiece, a useful surface beside seating, and a quiet anchor along the wall or behind the sofa.

What is an occasional table?

Occasional table is an umbrella term for the family of small living room tables that includes coffee tables, side tables, lamp tables, nest of tables and console tables. They are called occasional tables because they sit alongside the main furniture in a room rather than being part of the central seating or dining group.

What is the difference between a coffee table and a side table?

A coffee table is a larger, lower piece that sits in front of the sofa, anchoring the centre of the room. A side table is a smaller, taller piece that sits beside seating, usually at the height of the sofa arm. Both work together rather than against each other, with the coffee table grounding the room and the side table holding a lamp, a book or a drink within easy reach.

Should all my living room tables match?

They do not need to match exactly. A perfectly matched set can feel a little static. We often suggest sharing one material or finish across your table pieces, such as a common timber, a shared metal tone or a consistent sense of proportion, while letting form and scale vary. This creates a considered, layered look without feeling overly coordinated.

What is a console table used for?

A console table is a long, narrow table designed to sit against a wall or behind a sofa. It works as a styled surface in an entryway, an anchor along a hallway, or a soft divider behind a free-floating sofa in an open-plan room. Console tables are also called hall tables.

Can I order custom-made tables?

Yes. Several pieces in the McW Collection can be made to order, with the choice of finish, timber and proportion so the table suits your space exactly. The Belle Interiors Collection also includes custom-made design options. Visit a showroom or speak with our team online to start a custom enquiry.

Do you offer New Zealand-made tables?

Yes. A number of our living room tables come from the McW Collection and the Belle Interiors Collection, both designed and made in New Zealand, alongside designs from David Shaw and other trusted local makers. International designers in the range include Ethnicraft, Malta Design and Notre Monde.

What size coffee table do I need?

A coffee table should sit roughly two-thirds the length of the sofa in front of it, with a height that sits within a few centimetres of the top of the sofa seat cushions. For a standard three-seat sofa, that usually means a coffee table around 100 to 130 centimetres long and 40 to 45 centimetres high. Leave roughly 35 to 45 centimetres of space between the sofa and the coffee table so the room feels comfortable and the table is still within easy reach.
